Senior Spotlight: "Chill Days, Game Days, and Career Dreams: The Story of Zelma Siemsen"

Updated: Dec 17

Zelma Siemsen is a senior at RCHS that is involved in many extracurricular  activities. Zelma is very skillful in softball and basketball, demonstrating her athleticism  and teamwork on both the court and field. Although Zelma got injured her junior year, she really worked hard to make up for it this upcoming year. Zelma is an active member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Science Club. Zelma's commitment to these activities showcases her talents and drive for success.

Zelma's plans are to pursue a career in Radiology and Sonography with a minor in Psychology at Fort Hays. Zelma is committed to being in the medical field with diagnostic imaging. Along with Radiology and Sonography Zelma is also pursuing a psychology minor to understand human behavior and mental health better.

Zelma enjoys the random discussions she and her class share, especially on the “off days” when everyone is chill and relaxed. Random discussions pop up all around the room with no particular topic. Zelma also enjoys bus rides. The chatter and excitement rise as they travel in the beginning, to tired and relaxed at the end.

If Zelma could go back in time to visit one person, she would visit Alexander Hamilton. She admires that he is intelligent. She imagines that she could learn a lot from him. Meeting him would be an unforgettable experience, full of inspiration and valuable lessons that Zelma would carry with her.

If Zelma could go back to being a freshman, she would focus more on the “student” part of being a student-athlete. While playing sports was important to her, it can be challenging to balance academics and sports, but she realizes the key is prioritizing  schoolwork and staying on top of it.

However, if Zelma wrote a story about her years in high school she would title it “Tight Rope” where every day felt like walking on a tightrope. Maintaining a balance between academics, sports, mental health, and more was very difficult. Each step was a careful choice. She juggles the weight of expectations with her family and teachers while still being true to herself. With each year passing, she found herself pulled in different directions trying to find balance. Yet, with all the ups and downs, she found herself staying on the tightrope almost to the finish line.
