In Defense of Ukraine Spending Budget

Recently developments in the U.S. Congress have led to developments in the budget plan. Word of domestic problems has been getting louder and louder, but the situation in Ukraine was left out. Even more, it seems that Republican diplomats are discussing why it is important to even be in Ukraine in the first place. It is better we talk about why this situation is resolved now and we have a goal on why we are defending them. It is always better to fight with a reason to keep going instead of going with no purpose.

Russia has a very open grass flat land on the western border that makes it a very promising target for invaders. The plan that they held was Russia wanted Ukraine back to make a buffer from Western countries and to make attack less promising for invaders. The Urals being close to the center of the giant nation is truly the only part of

Russia that stops invaders on the ground from the geographical conditions. The winter in the west and the frozen tundra in Siberia is also an important factor. Russia has always worried about these problems and with building this buffer they could get more confident and begin invading other Baltic countries so they have more ports that connect to the Atlantic other than the ports in the Black Sea and the Frozen north. While the paranoia of Russia continuing the invasions of other countries in the region seem very much like the general perception of what people also associate with the Domino Effect of Communism in the 1960s in the eastern Asian countries, the reasoning here with continued invasions make more sense. With the Domino effect people were worried the idea of communism would spread, but proved to be wrong when it did not spread as much as it said it would. But with Russia, they wish to have more buffers so as to not be surrounded by democratic nations.

The countries of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are on the Baltic coast of Eastern Europe. These countries could prove vital assets to be used as landing grounds for Russia. These countries can build a land bridge from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad which has been surrounded by the countries. It can also open ports to the Baltic earlier for the Russians and not as risky. As such the want for Russia to take these countries must be an important asset. It has already come to light that the Kremlin wants to cut down control of the Nato forces in those nations. Belarus is another reason. Belarus has been an ally to Russia but finds itself to the North of Ukraine being a flank but borders Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. This makes them open to invasion. If this country were to be invaded, Russia would lose a valuable ally and lose an excellent staging ground and advantage of positioning on the battlefield.

The U.S has already sent Billions of dollars worth of supplies to Ukraine. We have hundreds of troops in Ukraine from volunteer units, aircraft, tanks, and hundreds of thousands if not millions of weapons. If we were to just give up on Ukraine it would be a loss of life that would most likely be in vain if all nations stopped helping. Ukraine also is rich in resources that if we lost would crumble our economy dramatically. The resources in question are Titanium, Manganese, and Coal. The largest Iron deposit is still under control of Ukrainian forces but if we were to leave and stop supplying to them, the mine would be lost in a few weeks if not days. While worrying about domestic affairs is incredibly important and our country should strive to do much more, this is one of the situations where this can’t be. Ukraine is too useful for us and the rest of the world to fall into Russian hands, and is also important to stop Russian aggression while it is still in its early stages.

While the U.S should really start to prioritize problems in our country first before foreign affairs, the situation in Ukraine is a necessity. People always like to complain about how the U.S gets involved in affairs we should involve ourselves in. The issue is when this country does not, we get criticized for lack of action. This country has a lose lose situation in terms of the predicament. Ukraine is not the same situation as other incidents that we should have not gotten involved with like the many conflicts in the middle east. Ukraine was attacked unjustly in contradiction to a deal they made with Russia in 1997. This nation was given a surprise attack much like ourselves by Japan on a mass scale. The war should not just be ignored as Russia is aggressively trying to take an independent country for themselves. It is important that thousands of lives have been taken in this war and it should not all go in vain.

It is best to stop the Russians now and stop their crimes that they have committed against the Ukrainians. They have committed countless massacres, bombed civilian infrastructure, even attempted to bomb the remains of Chernobyl. The Russians are desperate for this land but NATO must not give in. Ukraine has resources that the U.S and the rest of the globe needs, and NATO and the U.S has sent too much personnel, and material to let it all go to waste. It is also important to not give Russia an inch so they do not attempt to get any more countries nearby. It has already been revealed that they are interested in taking over Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia so their expansion would be inevitable. So it is best that the U.S keeps helping Ukraine, if not for the amount of money and resources we have sent to them, then for the families and soldiers that have suffered because of this invasion that need help.
