Earlier this week Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nephew of former president John F. Kennedy, and the third-party candidate for the 2024 presidential election, suspended his campaign for president of the United States and endorsed Republican Nominee Donald Trump. In an article by AP News, Kennedy said that he made this decision because the polls said his staying in the race would hurt Trump, and help Harris. The most recent polls put him at 3.3% nationally. That is compared to Trump’s 45% and Harris’s 46%. He did not want to “steal votes” from Trump, so he suspended his campaign. Kennedy felt he made the right choice, but some of his family felt his actions were a “betrayal” of their family’s values. RFKJ is not the first politician to drop their campaign and endorse Trump. He is, however, the most significant one, and the first Non-Republican to do so.
At the beginning of the year, 11 Republicans were running for President. One remains.
All of the Republicans who suspended their campaign endorsed former President Trump.
These candidates are Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Asa Hutchinson, Tim Scott, Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, Doug Burgum, Francis Suarez, Mike Pence, and Will Hurd. Multiple governors and Congress members have endorsed the president as well. For a complete list of Trump’s endorsements visit this list from the hill.com.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s decision to suspend his campaign and endorse Donald Trump marks a pivotal moment in the 2024 presidential race. As the most significant non-Republican figure to back Trump, Kennedy's endorsement underscores the consolidation of support around the former president within his party. Despite mixed reactions from his family, Kennedy believes his choice aligns with his political convictions. This endorsement, alongside those from other former Republican candidates, strengthens Trump's position as the leading candidate in the race.
