The Pros And Cons of Open Lunch

The idea has been brought up before that students with a high enough GPA, would be able to have an Open Lunch.  In this article, I will discuss the pros and cons of open lunch at Republic County High School.

The Pros:

Open lunch would be a good way of rewarding and encouraging students to get work done and maintain a high GPA. If people have something to work for, that they want, they will typically work hard to make it happen. Having open lunch could potentially make the School’s GPA average rise. Also, it would put less of a burden on the School’s Cafeteria, and the school would be able to save money that way. In addition to this, when kids are going out into the community, and spending money, it stimulates the local economy. Also, some of the tax on the food that is bought goes to the local government, which can in turn spend more on local infrastructure, and further boost the economy.

The Cons:

Having A high GPA doesn’t necessarily mean that you are always a trustworthy person. A lot can happen in a half hour for lunch. People could potentially go and do all kinds of bad things, and then come back to school and cause more problems. The school is responsible for kids from 8:00 to 3:30 every day. So it is a liability to let the kids go out of the school’s watch. Overall it’s just a situation where a lot of bad things could happen, and the school could be potentially responsible for any incidents that happened to the kids. Also, food takes time to order, so there could be more people late to Seminar.

Conclusion:

There are many economic, and behavioral benefits to having open lunch. There are also some potential liabilities. But I think that overall the good outweighs the bad. Kids often go home between school and sports practice, and incidents don’t really happen there. If more was Criteria than just a high GPA to have open lunch, (for example, NHS kids are accepted into NHS by having a good character, as judged by the teachers.) then we wouldn’t have to worry too much about kids going and doing stupid things during Open Lunch. People can probably bear to be late occasionally to Seminar. I think that the benefits far outweigh the detriments to Open Lunch and that we should seriously consider getting it at Republic County High School.
